Flogging a Dead Horse

If you have even a passing familiarity with web reviews you’ve probably stumbled upon reviews of the Star Wars prequels. These reviews do not tend to be favourable.

Well I watched Episode 1 the other day and it wasn’t quite as bad as I remembered. It certainly isn’t a great film but it’s not unwatchable.

Watching episode one is like watching a wooden spoon match. You can enjoy the skill of the players and get into the game but, ultimately, they are simply the bottom two teams and the winner and the loser doesn’t really matter. Similarly, in Episode 1, the battles are fun to look at but the who’s who is almost completely lost.

This may be a bad idea but I’m going to post a Star Wars review. This will be sometime in the not to distant future. It may be flogging a dead horse but at least we can guard against a zombie horse.

iphone or not iphone, that is the question

Every now and then I get a strange desire to buy something. I will search the web for that something and usually decided that I don’t really need it – or I get a headache from the searching.

Well as you can tell from the title I’ve been thinking of getting an iphone. The only reason I can come up with for wanting one is that they’re cool!

I could technically afford it, well just about, but the question I keep coming back to is what can it do that a cheaper (and much cheaper) model cannot?

There is a more important question though… What do I need? When your looking at phones, or any technology, you are bombarded with all this information. It doesn’t necessarily matter if the phone has all these marvellous features if all you want to do is call and text. For that you could just get one of the old Nokia 3310s – the were cool once and you still occasionally see one. I think it would be harder to find an iphone 1.

I want a new phone partly for Twitter. Sometimes something witty will occur when I’m out and about. By the time I get home the moment has passed or I’ve forgotten what I wanted to write.

I have found a phone that would do what I want. It’s quite old but still seems good but doesn’t have to cool factor. So maybe I’ll continue looking. As we all know with technology the longer you wait the better tech you can get.

Missed!

Didn’t get round to posting yesterday – sorry about that. Its been a bit of a strange weekend. University was cancelled because of the snow so I suddenly found myself with a free Friday and Saturday.

The good news is I’ve got a lot of writing done and I’m quietly confident about how its going.

It looks like the snow will be with us for another couple of days at least. Going to work tomorrow will be slippy but if I can get their without braking something it will be a victory!

Snow!

You know you’re old when you look out the window, see snow, and think ‘Bloody snow! I have things to do!’ Specifically my last university meeting before a deadline.

A Late Delivery from Cardiff

I had an idea the other day. Believe it or not this came from watching a clip show. Specifically TNG’s ‘Shades of Grey’

It occured to me that a story could be written using 50% old fottage. For those of you who don’t know ‘Shades of Grey’ came at the end of season 2 – just before TNG hit it’s stride.

So I’m going to write a story, set in my own universe, inspired by what ‘Shadea of Grey’ could have been.

The Sadist

Writers have a sadistic streek in them. Recently, in writing my novel, I’ve been thinking ‘I really need to kill this guy.’ Basically the death of one person has an important effect on those left behind. So you end up with the rather bizzare situation of being X amount through and being concerned that someone isn’t dead. I think it was Kurt Vonnegut who said, something to the effect of, that no matter how nice our character is we shouldn’t let that stop us from making horrible things happen to them. From that conflict develops and then we get our story.

An Army of Alarms

Next to my bed sits a mobile, a tablet and an ipod. On most days I set one alarm and that’s fine. Today though I had to be up early, made more difficult by having a late shift yesterday, so I set a large number of alarms. I set my ipod to beep every 15 minutes of so to make sure I was awake. Yes, I have to be up bright and early today but I find that those states are mutually exclusive.

The Illusive Idea

On Friday I have university. Before going I have a piece of writing to do based of a picture. We were given three pictures and told the write something outside of the normal areas we write in. So I decided to write a story for radio. Deciding that was the easy part. Somewhere along the way an idea began to take shape. I had characters and a vague idea of what was going to happen. Without trying to sound too silly writing can make you feel a little Godlike. As every time you pick up a pen, or put fingers to keyboard, you are creating a new world and new people. And, with a million or so words in the English language, every writer will discover a formation that no-one has seen before.

There are always possibilities

A new day. Work was very busy yesterday. Sometimes it feels like every house in Cardiff has sent a representative to come to the shop. Its funny but I tend to try to avoid the shops when its going to be busy. Yesterday though…

It was a cold January day. People began to look at their furniture in a new way. They decided that a sofa, or a cupboard wasn’t quite right for them. So in their masses they headed out. To a store that had stood for nearly ten years. A store for: families, couples, singles, and meatball lovers. A place that sold everything for the home. For some it was a home away from home. The name of the place is Ikea.

Match.com

Last night I decided to spend the money and sign up on Match.com. I have already realised that I might have made a mistake. I was receiving emails, before I decided to pay, about compatibility. They give you a ‘affinity score’ but ‘match affinity’ and ‘match’ are not the same place.

Nevertheless match does seem to have some useful tools and maybe it’ll be worth it.
