Last Minute Blog Post is Last Minute.

I made it to the gym yesterday that is only the second time in February. If I could reliably go to the gym as often as I could reliably eat food that was bad for me I would look amazing – okay that i an exaggeration I still have a lot of limitations to work with.

I went to the gym at almost the last minute. In so far that I left about fifteen minutes before they closed. Yes. My gym actually closes. In this day and age that is unusual. To say I enjoy going to the gym would be an exaggeration but I did not not enjoy it. It was relatively quiet – which is more than I can say for the streets.

There was a rugby match on in Cardiff yesterday. My interest in rugby doesn’t extend beyond wanting to know if Wales won. So I had no idea that I was leaving my home at a time when I would encounter so many people – so I had to navigate around them.

I don’t like crowds. I have never liked them and when I am in a crowd situation I always feel uneasy. It might have something to do with the fact that the people in the crowd are often are often drunk and rowdy – or it might be that I am short and I feel like I am unnoticed and unimportant. That is why Napoleon did what he did – well actually not but history is written by the victors! I leaned that from a Klingon! Churchill may have said it too.

Some times on my weekend off I think of going out to a club. Which is crazy for me but I do. I think the idea comes from a desperate attempt to meet someone. The truth is though I have only enjoyed a club once. That was because of some special company. In all other instances I am an introvert – so meeting someone is a problem.

After the gym I had a kebab (which kind of renders the gym moot but let’s leave that alone) and ate it while watching The Man with the Golden Gun and washed down with some cider. And that was quite an enjoyable evening. Being alone is nice but I would like to be alone with someone. That may or may not be a contradiction.

I can’t say the same for today. I went to bed late and got up late. I was feeling discombobulated this morning. The only good thing about that is that I get to use the word discombobulated. It took me a while to get going and I had to tell my brain to shut up a few times.

I do have an almost Homer Simpson like relationship with my brain as he does with his. It is nearly 1500 now and I am sitting in Starbucks to type this. I am feeing a bit more myself. There is still plenty I want to do today so I better snap to it. I hope that you all have had a most amazing day.

Call me, Gym

pexels-photo-136409 As you can tell from the title I have run out of gym puns.

Which doesn’t matter now as I have quite the gym. Last year I bought for a year in advance which ended on the 26th  of February. Over the course of that year I went to the gym 40 times.

That is not the best showing. The good news is that I spent less than I would have just going along to the gym and buying a day pass. So money wise it was, technically, worth it.

The thing about the gym is the amount of time it takes up. pexels-photo-859933 Granted I only live 15 minutes away but it still takes time. And I never felt like going after work or on consecutive days so that very much limited my options.

So what is my plan now? Abandon all hope of looking good and start washing myself with a rag on a stick?

No instead I am going to exercise at home. Little and often. I worked out that with the amount of time I went to the gym about 12 minutes, ish, a day would have more or less the same effect. This requires some fudging, and is by no means scientific, but I will see how it works.

dumbbells-training-silver-sports-163498 I bought a dumbbell. Yes. Just the one. I can alternate arms so there was no real need for two. I just need to make sure I keep a good count so that I don’t end up being lopsided.

I have no idea what effect doing weights for some few minutes a day will do. I will see how I look after giving it a few months.

I am also using Wii fit. I know that game is really old now but I enjoy it and I don’t have weighing scales other wise.

In addition to this there is walking. Today (2018-03-04) was a work day and I have walked 10.66 kilometres according to my pedometer so that and walking on days off might be enough.

How do you like to keep fit? What keeps you motivated to go to the gym? And how do you find the time?

Your Name is Gym?

I’ve spoken about going to the gym on this blog before and now with the new year I’ve started going again. I started at the end of pexels-photo-136409 February, 26th to be precise, and have gone six times so far.

All the excuses I may once have made have now evaporated as I’m now only a twenty minute walk from the gym as opposed to a thirty minute train ride as I was before.

I think that the gym is something I don’t like exactly but it is something I feel to be necessary. I’ve never been that happy with how I look and maybe this will help me to feel more confident in myself. I think that is working to some extent. I also need to cut out junk food. I used to have cola quite a bit, drinks are free at work, but I’m trying to drink mostly water. I drink tea too, I’m British after all, and juice as well.

It is always said of the gym that most people, including me in the past, go for a little while then get board and then quit. Well that’s not going to happen this time. I have a cunning plan.  I have paid for the gym a year in advance so I can’t quit. It is already done and paid for so now I have to use it!

At least that is the plan.

snake-toxic-dangerous-terrarium-38290

I was looking for a picture of an adder – you know Blackadder cunning plan? – Anyway found this – I rather like it.

Perhaps I’ll end up saying ‘fuck it’ and cut my losses. Who can say? Saying I would know. Do not know so cannot say. Does anyone but me know where that comes from? Gold star if you do.

This has nothing to do with anything but I have my robot vacuum cleaner running as I write this. I can set it to auto clean but it gets stuck easily and I have visions of it knocking everything over if I leave it to its own devices.

Anyway where was I?

I do feel that this time it is going to work and I am going to stick with the gym. As touched on earlier I do need to cut down on junk food too. pexels-photo-103886 That is the real challenge. I mean just looking at this picture here makes me salivate like I’m Homer Simpson – complete with drooling noise. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if hummus and carrots was just as appetizing? I guess maybe if you’re vegan they are.

I’m sure someone a lot smarter than me could explain why we like bad food so much more than healthy food.

Although, now that I think about, I do sort of crave healthy food a bit. If I have been eating badly for a few days I do tend to want to stay away from fried food and have something more like this: vegetables-frying-pan-greens So maybe there is hope for me after all.

Though right now I want a burger.

Yes. After first writing this, it’s a few days later now, I did get a burger. It was nice. Cue Homer Simpson drooling.

17 Days

How is your year going?

For me, in those seventeen days, I have utterly failed to go to the gym. So that’s one thing that hasn’t changed.

Writing though is going well. My long worked on novel is finally all coming together. The key, it seems, was to have a narrator. She is able to pull the threads together and tell the story. Plus she can act as an author surrogate and speak in a more colloquial fashion.

Today is Sunday and I have the day off. Outside my window it’s so misty I can hardly see the tops of the mountains. It may be 1339 here but I haven’t been up long. Last night I didn’t sleep well and on waking it took a while to get out of bed.

This is ramble in case you hadn’t noticed.

I’ve set myself the task of reading 52 books this year. So far I’ve read: Gaslight Carnival, The Hobbit, and The Five Orange Pips. The Hobbit I actually listened to and the other two are short stories but I’m still counting them. 52 books should be doable.

The version of The Hobbit I listened to was read by Rob Inglis and it was excellent. I remember being bored by the book when I was younger but this time it was very good.

I’m keeping up with leaning Welsh though I’m not sure how much of it is sinking in. I can’t write it here as I only know how to say it. Also if I can’t handle English gamma and spelling do you really think I could handle it for Welsh?

Yesterday I didn’t leave the flat, and may not again today, that’s okay though. I will create worlds, play Mario Kart, and try and tidy up a bit.

This is a strange post I know. I’d make it a poem if I knew how. Maybe that is something to work on.

I received notification of not having won a short story competition the other day. It’s the taking part that counts though. Someone read it which is good. It means I have something to submit to another magazine.

Hope your year is going well and I’ll be back soon.

Not What it Seems

As you know I’m a member of a gym. The gym in question is about a 30 minute train journey away. It seemed like a logical choice. I already have a monthly train ticket, because of work, so the train fare wasn’t an issue. I figured I’d go on my days off and one day after work. However… my job involves standing up all the time… therefore I don’t usually feel like going after work. On my days off it feels like quite a rigmarole going all that way.

The solution is obvious – find a gym closer to home. I did my googgling and found one.  It was £3.20 for one session and only a 15 minute walk. The website looked most professional. They offer membership and have ‘superb facilities including locker rooms’

They do not…

Basically this gym was just a room with some equipment. I suppose technically that describes all gyms of this type. However I was expecting a lot more from what the website said. The equipment was a little on the dirty side, it needed dusting (so does my flat but that’s a separate issue), and there weren’t locker rooms. There were lockers on a landing with three showers.

Maybe I was expecting too much. That is certainly a possibility but the gym I go to in Cardiff is cheaper than this little place. Also the showers actually drain and you don’t end up standing in a good few inches of water.

I guess it just goes to show that anyone can make a good website.

So for now I’ll stick with the large gym in town. At least I can read on the train.

He’s Dead Gym

I only went to the gym once this week. Ironic as I was telling you, only two weeks ago, about how I’d been keeping up with it. Once in the week is not too bad. Let me explain why I didn’t go again. No, there is too much, let me sum up. It was a combination of wanting to write a couple of chapters beforehand and, on the other days, late shifts.

And yes there was one other thing…

Yes I discovered a new you tuber Anna Akana. She’s funny and, yes I admit it, attractive. When writing is dragging a bit its easy to get sucked into something else! Anything else. I wonder what the displacement of HMS Victory is….

So maybe I’m wasting my life. What do you care? You’re not my mother! Well one of you is.

I shall now precede with a awkward segue.

A mother is the person who takes care of you when you’re young. In other words they are a guardian.

I saw Guardians of the Galaxy on Monday. Here’s seven thoughts about it. Why seven? Wouldn’t you like to know.

  1.  It was an enjoyable film. There was good action, it was well acted, and the 3D was great. I saw Avatar in 3D and was disappointed, both by the tech of 3D and Avatar, but here the 3D was good. Even in a simple scene of characters gathered around a bed it looked like some of them were closer to you than others.
  2. Not enough Karen Gillan. I’m bound to make this observation, being British, but I think it is a real shame. She didn’t have much to do in the film as Nebula. She wasn’t even at the level of a henchman from a Bond film. There was some attempt to giver her back story with Gamora – but it wasn’t fully developed. Confused Mathew, in his review, doesn’t even mention Nebula. She was hardly needed – Is it wrong that I was attracted to her even as a sci-Borg?
  3. The back story to Star Lord is that he was abducted as a child from Earth. He listens to eighties music but, other than that, there is little to differentiate him from the human looking aliens. The film gave no explanation of why a young boy was abducted. To me there was no point in this plot point. I know there are comics but I have to approach this just from the film. The film gave no explanation and I haven’t read the comics.
  4. Cliche plot – bad guy wants to destroy stuff. There is a muguffin that will help him do this and the good guys have to stop him getting it. However his full motivations aren’t satisfactorily explored.
  5. Helpless guards. This isn’t a nitpick and isn’t really worth mentioning but I want to. During the escape the good guys attack the prison guards. These guards are innocents. They don’t know what’s going on they’re just doing their jobs. It seems ridiculous, when we’re supposed to be rooting for the guardians, that they are indiscriminately killing the guards.
  6. Groot only says ‘I am Groot’ I got the impression they were trying to make him into a Chewbacca-ish character. Although he only said three words his friend, Rocket, understood what he meant and that really worked.
  7. While this film won’t win any awards for the story it was enjoyable. I look forward to seeing the next one but its not a desperate can’t wait feeling. Its more like ‘Whenever you’re ready. I have time.’

It’s Life Gym But Not as We Know It

Five weeks ago I posted here about joining a gym. I’m  still going! Does that count as an achievement? Maybe. If I’d made going to the gym a New Year’s Resolution I’d be into February. The common wisdom is that that is unusual.

I actually like going to the gym. Previously I exercised using wii fit. Despite the wii being in my flat, obviously, I never quite felt like exercising. There was no time before work and I was tired after work. The gym is better exercise yet doing that after work feels easier. This is probably because when you get home you want to slump.

The annoying thing about the gym is the music. Sometimes there is multiple competing music. The gym is open plan so when there is a class it’s music, or in my view noise, plays on top of the general music. Meanwhile I’m trying to listen to my own music.

Exercising with music makes it easier. I find it gives you something to aim for. When the current treadmill level gets too difficult I’ll try and wait to the end of the song to reduce it.

The music is my only real gripe about the gym. It does seem just a tad strange to have it when most everyone has MP3 players or phones.

What’s on my gym playlist?

Okay I’ll tell you.

Don’t judge me.

Please.

I actually have three playlists, of different lengths, because sometimes you only feel like exercising for a short time. This is my long playlist…

  1. Star Trek: The Next Generation – Main Title – (Without voice-over and the tune is a little different)
  2. Go the DistanceEmma Blackery
  3. Dancing in the RainRuth Lorenzo
  4. Would You Be Happier? The Corrs
  5. Hunter of StarsSebalter
  6. Bring it All BackS Club 7
  7. Tick – Tock Mariya Yaremchuk
  8. Hard Rock HallelujahLordi
  9. Calm After the StormThe Common Linnets
  10. Two in A Million – S Club 7
  11. 99 Red BalloonsNena
  12. Children of the UniverseMolly
  13. Everybody Wants Ya – S Club 7
  14. OpaGiorgos Alkaios & Friends
  15. Fear the Future – Emma Blackery
  16. ShineTolmachevy Sisters
  17. No More Cry – The Corrs
  18. SatelliteLena
  19. I Quit – Hepburn
  20. Star Trek: The Next Generation – End Credits

Yeah… Star Trek, Eurovision, S Club… well there you go….

I Joined a Gym

After thinking about it for a while I joined a gym this week. Will I use it? Who can say. I figure if I use it 3 times a week it’ll be worth it.

Before this I was exercising using Wii Fit – yeah I know not the best way. Unfortunatly it made too much noise now that I live in a flat.

So the gym will, I’m sure, be an interesting experience. I shall now take bets as to how long I will keep going for – and, after that, how long it will take to get round to cancelling the membership.
